HK Designs is a manufacturer of well-designed spun metal products located in Pittsburgh, PA. We are affiliated with EH Schwab Metal Spinning and launched in 2003 with the reissue of the original spun metal designs of Russel Wright. These timeless works of industrial design from the mid 20th Century were manufactured to the exact dimensions, material, finish and process as the originals.
We often collaborate with local craft producers to create unique, limited edition works of art. Each is rooted in Pittsburgh's industrial past but reflective of the city's resurgence of creative producers and craft artisans.
The majority of our work are custom projects, made-to-order, manufactured to the specifications of an architect or designer. Our vast inventory of existing tooling helps defray the costs to create unique and eclectic pieces. Please forward your drawings and specifications for a prompt quotation.
The metal spinning process is one of the oldest techniques for forming flat sheets of metal into 3 dimensional objects.
History records evidence that the early Egyptians were experienced with the craft. The technique spread throughout Europe and eventually to Colonial America. In the early 1900’s skilled artisans and companies began to experiment with newer materials and larger diameters. Industrial designer Russel Wright (1904-1976) pioneered the use of spun aluminum in his line of Stove-to-Tableware products in 1930 preceding the very popular Kensington Ware products of the 1950s. Today, spun metal parts are used in a variety of applications and products across a multitude of industries including aerospace, architectural, electric power, food service and healthcare.
Unique among manufacturing processes, metal spinning remains an art form. Whether the operation is carried out manually or through sophisticated CNC controls, the techniques involved have been developed through years of trial and error—all under the watchful eye of a highly skilled Master Spinner.
Materials often include cold rolled steel, 3003 series aluminum and C110 copper to distinguish from more common imported products. Raw materials are locally sourced where possible. All products, including accessories developed with our producer partners are made in Pittsburgh, PA.
The highest quality multi-stage industrial coatings are used on all steel and some aluminum pieces. All copper objects receive a natural dark patina finish without any topcoat. The finish will continue to darken over time.
Custom colors and finishes are available upon request.
